SOPO Grand

RESIDENTIAL | RENOVATION

South Portland, Maine

This first floor interior renovation project was designed and partially built by gaf's very own m.a.b. The primary goal of this project was to fully gut the existing kitchen and mudroom area and update the existing spaces with a fresh, custom aesthetic that paid homage to the 1900 Victorian home built by a Dutch immigrant. With a very compartmentalized original floor plan, the space lacked natural daylight and air flow. Breaking down walls, widening doorways and maintaining original doors and coffered ceilings were design decisions crucial to keeping a piece of history within the home.

In keeping with the known craftiness of the Dutch, multiple built-in window seats utilized the interstitial spaces for storage while providing the functional purpose of views to the exterior of the home. The end results proved to achieve all original goals while maintaining the soul of the home.
