WEST END WONDER
RESIDENTIAL | RENOVATION
Portland, Maine
This gem of a home in Portland's West End was being fully renovated by the homeowners when gafARCH was approached. They had been getting their own hands dirty with the design and renovation of the three-story brownstone that included overhauls of the first-floor rental unit, kitchen, living areas and loft style bedrooms on the upper floor. They were at a fork in the road when the time came to renovate the existing 7'-6" x 5'-6" bathroom. Being such a small space and wanting a glazed walk-in shower to be the primary focus, we sat down and went to town on literal napkin sketches. After nailing down the "needs" for the space, multiple layout options were presented evaluating proper clearances and functioning use of the floor plan. After a few reiterations and discussions, they fell in love with the final layout that gave them their "needs" and "wants". A large walk-in shower with built in bench and overhead rainfall shower head, window replacement with frosted glazing and custom-made cabinets designed to maximize storage utilizing the high ceilings.
No project is ever too small to take on and this project is the perfect example. The thought, care and detail that went into this 40 square foot bathroom renovation was truly reflected in the final product. Being featured in the January/February 2023 issue of the Maine Magazine proves just that. Being able to contribute to just a small piece of the larger renovation project and make a house feel like home is extremely gratifying.
